Exploring Taipei's Night Market Scene | 發現台北夜市
There are a ton of night markets serving all sorts of snacks and dishes in Taipei! Join me as I make my way through the different night markets and and document my journey in the process! Let's go:
Ningxia Night Market 寧夏夜市
Ningxia Night Market is just beside the famous Dadaocheng 大稻埕, which is an old area of Taipei. After strolling across Dadaocheng and observing the historic sites, it's great to end the day by gorging on amazing Taiwanese street snacks here. The most famous dish here is the oyster omelet 蚵仔煎! It's so worth it, it only costs NT$60. Make sure to come early though, there might be lines of people waiting just for a bite.
How to get there: Just take the MRT and get off at Zhongshan MRT Station Exit 1 and walk for around 10 minutes.
Raohe Night Market 饒河夜市
The Raohe Night Market is located in Songshan, just beside the famous Songshan Matsu Temple 松山慈祐宮. The night market was originally set up by the government as a way to boost local businesses back in 1987.
Nowadays, the night market is known for is famous traditional Taiwanese snacks such as pepper buns, grilled squid, and even new fusion snacks such as pizza on a Taiwanese pancake are available! That was really interesting to savor.
How to get there: Take the MRT and get off at Songshan MRT Station Exit 1 and walk for roughly 5-10 minutes. There are signs pointing towards the direction of the night market, so as long as you follow along, you should be good to go.
Nanjichang Night Market 南機場夜市
Nanjichang Night Market is a really interesting night market, as it was built on a former military airstrip, hence the name "Nanjichang" which literally translates to Southern Airport. The area is kind of an old area and it is filled with old KMT-era housing, some of which still have ROC flags hanging outside of houses.
Interestingly, the market was much larger than I thought it would be. It was also really crowded, especially on a weekday. This is more of a local night market, I didn't see any foreigners there, except for a vendor selling chicken shawarma. Unfortunately, he was all out when I visited. This market has everything, that too at extremely reasonable prices. I bought a giant chicken cutlet for only NT$50! People were waiting in line, and it was really good quality too!
One thing about Taiwanese night markets is that, if people are waiting in line for something, you know it will be good!
How to get there: This night market is not as convenient to get to though, you'll either have to catch a bus from the city or take the MRT to Taipei Main Station and then catch a bus to get to the night market.
Huaxi Night Market 華西夜市
Huaxi Night Market is located in Wanhua, the oldest district in Taipei! It's right beside Longshan Temple, one of the most famous temples in all of Taiwan.
Believe it or not, this night market has more than 50 years of history! Apparently, the street used to be part of a red light district up until the 1990's.
The night market also used to be famous as all sorts exotic meat used to be sold there, but nowadays, there is only 1 store that still sells snake meat. The rest have since shut down.
How to get there: It's quite convenient to reach this night market. Just catch the MRT till Longshan Station and exit via Exit 1. Cross the road and you're there.
